Yangarra Estate is situated at the base of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia’s McLaren Vale region. The property spans 420 acres with 250 acres of biodynamically-farmed vineyards. The rest of the land is preserved in native vegetation, creeks and natural corridors. The combination of rare geological conditions, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and cool evening breezes make this an exceptional place for Rhone varieties.

Yangarra’s history begins in 1946 when the property was called Lalla Rookh or “love nest.” That year, Bernard Smart, who still lives onsite with his wife, helped his father plant the non-irrigated bush-vine Grenache that still thrives at the estate’s High Sands Vineyard. Nicknamed “the beach,” this anomalous formation possesses wind-blown sand and ironstone soils that are the weathered remnants of a mountain range that disappeared millions of years ago.

Since its launch in 2001, Peter Fraser has been the estate’s only winemaker. In addition to Yangarra, Peter has worked and consulted at wineries in Australia, Spain, France and the U.S. His winemaking is intuitive and taste-driven.
