Without Matanzas Creek there would probably be no Bennett Valley AVA. The quality and individuality of the winery’s wines singlehandedly led to the approval of the AVA application in 2003. Founded by Bill and Sandra McIver in 1977 and acquired by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke in 2000, Matanzas Creek Winery is one of only three bonded wineries in this small but important cool climate Sonoma County region.
The winery harvests all of its fruit from estate vineyards located throughout the protected east- central AVAs of Sonoma County, including Bennett Valley, Knights Valley and Alexander Valley.
This is hilly to mountainous terrain with soils that range from volcanic to maritime. The large temperature swings from day to night make it ideal territory for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot – the core varieties of the winery.
Since 2010, Matanzas Creek’s wines have been made by Marcia Monahan-Torres. Marcia began her enological career in her native Chile in 1995 before moving to Napa Valley to work at Cardinale. Her international experience and unique perspective on viticulture and winemaking have had a dramatic impact on the style and quality of Matanzas Creek’s wines.
